Born in Osaka, Japan. Graduated Osaka University with Bachelor of Science in Biology, Kyoto University with MSc and PhD in Developmental Biology. Postdoctoral Fellow in University of Toronto, Canada. Joined the University of Hawaii as a faculty member in 2000.
